Pillar #2. Cellular Nutrition

Let’s be clear about one thing: Nutritional supplements DO NOT replace the nutrients missing from a poor diet. You MUST have a healthy meal plan FIRST. That said, some people feel they don’t need to take vitamins or nutritional supplements. Are they sure? How do they know?

After 28 years as a Fitness Professional and almost 60 years on this planet, I’ve come to the conclusion that I don’t want adequate health, I want OPTIMAL HEALTH. CELLULAR NUTRITION is a key component. From my perspective, it’s all about understanding what’s going on inside our bodies and the war being waged between our cells and a thing called OXIDATIVE STRESS. Oxidative stress is the damage to our cells through an oxidative process that involves nasties called FREE RADICALS. Basically, we’re “rusting” from the inside out. Inflammation triggered by this oxidative stress is the cause of much of chronic human disease including aging.

These Free Radical molecules are a normal byproduct of regular metabolic function. Even the Neanderthal Man had them. However, our cells were only made to withstand so much exposure to these destructive forces. Today, our cells are fighting off the effects of Free Radicals caused by all sorts of things. Here’s just a few:

High blood sugars (poor nutrition in general), EXCESS stress, (do you remember when we never mentioned this word?) pollution of our environment, prescription medications, radiation from the sun, EXCESS exercise, smoking and even stuff in your house containing or generating harmful toxins like: your Teflon frying pan, plastic containers, (we only just recently found out about BPA!) body ‘care’ products with harmful preservatives, “mountain fresh” smelling cleaning and laundry products, dry cleaning… oh and let’s not forget the electro-magnetic radiation from gadgets like cellphones, mp3 players, microwaves, clock radios etc. Hmmm… one more? How about Mercury poisoning from those amalgam fillings?

This oxidative mayhem has been implicated in the cause of many diseases. What sort of disorders are a result out-of-control Oxidative Stress? A better question would be “What isn’t?” Alzheimer’s, Bipolar Disorder, Cancer, Cardiovascular Disease, Diabetes, Fibromyalgia, Macular Degeneration, Parkinson’s Disease are only a few of them.

Simply put, our body’s cells are the fundamental units of life and proper cellular function is the essence of health. We need to keep these cells healthy by supplying all the proper nutrients they require to combat cellular damage caused by poor nutrients in our food, stress, environmental pollution, excessive physical strain and radiation from the sun etc. etc. . And, because the environmental stresses on our cells has increased over the years we require a higher level of nutrition than we can get from our food. Nutritional supplementation with pharmaceutical-grade multi-vitamin/minerals and antioxidants is essential for optimal health.

Our bodies didn’t come with an easy-to-use manual so we need to educate ourselves. I urge everyone to do their homework:

Learn what nutrients are necessary for proper cellular function.

Learn where these nutrients come from.

Understand why our food no longer contains the amount of nutrients it used to.

Know that for over 50 years the public has been led to believe that Recommended Dietary Allowance (RDA) was adequate. It’s not. (unless you have scurvy)

2011 has been another year of learning for us. We’ve come to a point in the life of H3F where our combined experience is painting a picture of what it really takes to make it through the pathways of life with the best health possible. Not ‘average’ health but OPTIMAL health. In the coming weeks, we’ll be discussing the 5 Pillars we’ve adopted for ourselves and those people that are looking for answers. Check back to the Xercise Files regularly to learn about all 5 Pillars.

At times is a real challenge to understand what’s going on in people’s minds. As a society, we’re not really getting it when it comes to health and fitness and it’s becoming clear that our health care system is struggling to keep up. Our culture has a focus on “curing” rather than the primary prevention of disease. And, we spend little time prescribing the lifestyle changes that might prevent disease in the first place. We need to take charge of our own health and determine our own future. How? Adopt lifestyle habits known to reduce the risk of chronic degenerative diseases such as heart disease, cancer, osteoporosis, type 2 diabetes to name just a few. We’ve adopted a “5 Pillars” approach that we believe will help people develop these necessary lifestyle changes on their journey to better health. It takes all 5 pillars to work towards optimal health.

Pillar #1. Dietary Nutrition
You are what you eat. To be in the best health, you must eat the best diet you can. But be careful, food isn’t what it used to be. For example, the quality of the soils we grow our food in has declined dramatically. (See http://nutritionsecurity.org) We’re very fortunate to have the fabulous organic foods at the Quesnel Farmer’s Market but we can’t buy these products year round and must rely on foods that are much lower in nutrients. It’s now clear we have to steer clear of processed and fast foods. We suggest our clients learn about the Glycemic Index and adopt a low glycemic meal plan to bring better dietary nutrition to their tables. (See http://lowgimeals.com/)

We had a great last day on the Lumby Loop. We agree it went by all too fast but we know there’s another trip just waiting down the road.
There were many highlights but the main one was – we were safe. The riding wasn’t always a piece of cake and everyone took care to pick the right track, be aware of the hidden traps on a downhill ride and always check the mirror for stuff behind. Our metabolisms are revved up and we all feel the huge benefits from riding for three weeks. Cycle touring is a great way to catch up on your sleep. Generally 9 – 10 hours a night!
We promised you some stats. Well, we’ve done some re-calculations and we’re pretty sure that our bike pedals turned 300,000 times in the three weeks. Wow. That’s lots of heartbeats.
We’ll see you here on our next tour. Stay tuned and come back to visit the Xercise Files often.

Had morning coffee on the beach at Fintry. It’s a particularly beautiful spot on the great Okanagan Lake.
The Westside Road was a busy place. It was a combination of people out for a drive and those headed to town to do some shoppin’. Stopped at the amazing Little Kingdom Store on the Okanagan Band Reserve. (see photo)
Made our way to Armstrong on Otter Lake Road. Great cycling in spite of the rising temperature.
A few beers this afternoon and then just time for chillin’ on our last full day.

As I write this post we have one more full day of riding and one more campout ahead of us. It’s been an amazing journey full of laughs, personal and group challenges but mainly just a heck of a lot of fun.
We’re camped at Fintry tonight on Okanagan Lake. When we look south and try to envision the Lumby Loop as a really big circle on a map, it’s pretty empowering to know that every inch of it was attained by human power. Quite amazing – these bodies we live in. Feed them the right fuel and they will respond to the demands. Like climbing the Paulson Pass from Castlegar. 45 km up – all the way. Cool.
We’re so happy we found summer. We think everyone will agree, it’s been a lousy summer in BC. We’re grateful to have had three weeks of mostly sunshine during this tour.
We’ve had lots of very curious people ask about the route and where we’ve come from. Many people were amazed this could even be done. “One pedal at a time”. That’s how it’s done.
Come back for the last blog entry soon. We’ll have Marj working on the stats. for those of you into that. And, we’ll find one more story for you – from the white line.

You remember Bruce. He was the fella from Vancouver that shared the Russian dinner with us in Grand Forks. This is his mascot El Capitan. EC was found on the road during one of Bruce’s cycle tours. He’s been with him ever since, leading the way. Whenever Bruce is unsure of the direction, he relies on El Capitan’s keen sense of awareness. Kind of like a built in GPS powered by kharma.
Bruce works for Air Canada loading planes and enjoys the associated perks that come with the job. That’s how Bruce found himself cycling on the Yucatan in Mexico and stumbled upon EC. Bruce has had the good fortune to cycle in many countries and since their fortuitous encounter, EL Capitan has accompanied him on every trip.

We’re back in BC now but the two night stay in Oroville WA was great. Lounging on the shores of Osoyoos Lake and shopping at Prince’s occupied most of our time. Princes grocery/clothing/millnery/sporting goods/hardware/wine+beer/deli store has been there for a long time. Hasn’t changed.
We rode back to Keremeos via the Loomis-Oroville road. Spectacular views of the sometimes lazy Similkameen River. Lots of mini powered sluice boxes along the way fueled by the current gold prices. Hot and sunny all the way.
We waited in the lineup at the Chopaka border crossing. The truck at the front of the line was having the once-over. When it was our turn the obligatory interrogation about cigarettes, alcohol, or bringing back firearms seemed absurd for obvious reasons. Welcome home!
Hot ride into Keremeos. The wind is blowing as usual. Set up assistance was provided by Alexander Keith.
Here’s a photo of the gals 1/2 way up the hill out of Rock Creek. Mist rising from the moisture left by the thunderstorms.

Our rides continue to be safe and exhilarating. It’s a really great time.
We were really happy to say goodbye to the mosquitoes in Winlaw. A cool morning greeted us on Hwy. 6 in the shade of the Selkirks. When we arrived at Crescent Valley we turned west, crossed the Slocan River and headed to Krestova on the Pass Creek Road. As the hot afternoon sun took over we rode into the Columbia River Valley. The regional district campground on Pass Creek in Castlegar was our home for the night. We soon found out we had company coming! Teralee, a Fitness trainer and friend of Meg’s dropped by as did Barbara, a Facebook friend who went to school with Heather. It was a busy afternoon… We made time for a cool dip in the creek and some planning for our ascent of the Bonanza and Paulson summits on Monday.
Our plans involved getting up really early to beat the heat and to give ourselves plenty of time to climb the 45km. We also knew there was some road construction as well. We left the camp at 5:30 and were climbing the first hill after a quick stop at Tim’s. The greatly anticipated ride up to the summit went really well. Stopped at Nancy Green’s park for lunch and then hit the last 6km to the summit. This is where the construction was. The whole road was ripped up with only the old shoulder left to ride on. We stuck with it and had a pretty big smile on when we pulled over at the summit. Only thing left to do was ride the 30+ km down to Christina Lake. Wow. What a ride!
In Christina Lake it was 32 deg. Mmmm. Time for a swim in the Kettle River next to the campground at Cascade Cove.
It was a red letter day. Safe riding, incredible scenery and time for good conversation over dinner and a well-deserved cold beer.
Tomorrow’s a short day to Grand Forks in search of the best perogies… The journey continues.

We’ve had some fantastic riding in the past few days. Climbing over the Monashees has to be one of the best cycle tour routes around. Beautiful ride along Arrow Lake to Nakusp. The Ospreys were with us most of the way. And today up out of Nakusp to Slocan Lake and New Denver. Some more climbing and a hot day for this type of riding. Finished off today with a Buddist Feast made with fresh local organic veggies and a cool swim in the lake. Here’s the view from the camp. Off to Winlaw, Castlegar and points west tomorrow.
